In 1970, New York conceptual artist Lee Lozano began the work she continued until her death known as Dropout Piece; she left the art world. That same year, British singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan’s second album was panned by critics, and she retreated to a life without music on Scotland’s Hebrides. They both sought freedom.
